Written Scheme of Examination (WSE)

Understanding Pressure System Safety Regulations 2000, Section 8

What is Section 8?

Section 8 of the Pressure System Safety Regulations 2000 plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and integrity of pressure systems used in various industries. This section outlines the requirements for an Examination Scheme, a critical aspect of pressure system management.

The Examination Scheme

1. Written Scheme: Section 8 mandates that pressure systems must have a written scheme for examination. This scheme should outline the scope, frequency, and methods of examination to ensure that the system remains safe and fit for purpose.

2. Competent Persons: Examinations should be carried out by competent persons with the necessary knowledge, skills, and experience. They should be able to assess the condition of the pressure system and identify potential safety issues.

3. Record Keeping: Detailed records of examinations and inspections must be maintained. These records provide a historical account of the system’s safety, helping to identify trends and areas for improvement.

4. Report of Examination: Following an examination, a report must be produced. This report should detail the findings, any defects or concerns, and any necessary corrective actions. It is an essential document for ensuring the ongoing safety of the pressure system.

Why Section 8 Matters

Compliance with Section 8 is essential for various reasons:

Safety: Ensuring the safety of pressure systems and the protection of individuals working with or near them.

Legal Obligations: Compliance with the law is a requirement, and non-compliance can lead to serious consequences.

Efficiency: Regular examinations can help identify and address issues before they become major problems, reducing downtime and costs.

What is a WSE (Written Scheme of Examination)?

It is a document containing information about certain items of plant equipment which form a pressure system. The document will identify the equipment within a pressure system, how and when it should be examined as well as any special measures which need to be taken for a safe examination. The WSE is centred around safety, taking extra steps to avoid the risk of failing equipment and serious accidents.

Which systems need a WSE?

Any system which comprises pressure vessels or pipework which holds substances under pressure as well as containing a ‘relevant fluid’ which is a gas operating over a pressure of 0.5 bar or containing steam under pressure.

A WSE is required if the product of the pressure in bar and internal volume in litres of its pressure vessels is in each case
more than 250 bar litres.

Who is qualified to do a WSE?

Our engineers are trained to the high standards of the BCAS. We are able to produce a Written Scheme of Examination document for you and undertake an inspection in accordance with it.

Pressure System Examination according to WSE containing:

  • Visual inspection and testing of pressure system elements.
  • Safety valves & pressure gauges testing.
  • Pressure vessel inspection (internal & external).
  • Ultrasound NDT air receiver testing.
  • Producing relevant inspection reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is a Written Scheme of Examination?
A Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) is a legally required document under PSSR 2000 that details how your compressor pressure system must be inspected.

Q: How often does my air receiver need inspecting?
Most pressure systems require inspection every 12–26 months depending on size, usage and duty. Your scheme will specify the interval.

Q: What does the inspection include?
It includes internal and external examination of the air receiver, safety valves, pressure controls, pipework, and system safety components.

Q: Who is classed as a “competent person”?
A competent person must have suitable engineering knowledge, experience and authority to assess the safety of pressure systems — such as our engineers or trusted partners.

Q: Is a WSE the same as a service?
No. A WSE is a legal safety inspection, not routine maintenance. Many sites require both.

Q: Do you provide compliance reminders?
Yes — we track your inspection dates and notify you before your next WSE is due.
